Attending the World Economic Forum in Durban, my colleague and I stayed in the City Lodge Hotel close to the International Convention Centre. Waze showed a 500m walk to the beach but oh how things could have turned out different.
Not five minutes into the walk someone started following us, but before anything happened the police lights sounded and he was off. Increased police presence resulted in an overview of the risk factors of the area that we were staying in, a subsequent free lift to our destination and most importantly diverting a potentially dangerous situation.
Lesson learned. Don’t go on a journey without sufficient knowledge of the lay of the land.
Thankfully this schoolboy error had a happier ending.
