Bleak Christmas for Aurora workers

Aurora workers face another bleak Christmas, the Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) in the North West said on Tuesday.

“Workers are trapped in real poverty, workers have no food, workers have no electricity, no water, some of those workers are sick, and others have passed on due to stress created by poverty…” said provincial secretary Solly Phetoe.

“We are told that the liquidators have received the writ of execution to take up the matter with the sheriff to put the properties of that investment company on sale to get the R35 million that belongs to the poor workers.

“We are asking the sheriff to proceed now so that workers are able to get something before December 25.”

Phetoe said they visited workers after reports that the Bhana investment company, which was instructed to prove to court by December 15 that it would have money to pay workers, was nowhere to be found.

“…Bhana is the company that was appointed by Aurora to run their finance and it came out that they had received a lot of money during the processes of liquidation and they have not paid any of the creditors which include poor workers to an amount of R35m,” he said.
