🔒 Boardroom Talk – First half’s investment table, a listicle, a tip for later today – and an apology

By Alec Hogg

A few short notes for you today –

    ___STEADY_PAYWALL___
  • The table below from Kevin Lings at Stanlib shows how topsy-turvy the first half of 2023 has been. The table is a near reversal of what happened last year. Most obviously, after being the worst and second worst performers in 2022, Bitcoin and Nasdaq are one-two after bouncing back strongly in 2023.
  • On Friday night I spent an hour interviewing Eskomite Jan Oberholzer for the Hermanus Fynarts project. The Blue Bull supporting electrical engineer retired as Eskom’s COO in April, but has a two-year contract to oversee the key projects to make load-shedding bearable. Straight, forthright and honest to a fault, Oberholzer left me feeling the state utility has at least one adult at the top table. I’ll be editing our chat into a highlights package – on BizNews later today.
  • Available right now is the list of June’s most-watched videos on BizNews TV.  Given the sheer volume of the news flow, there are bound to be a few goodies that escaped your attention. Here’s the link: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLBtclp07z_1mSingt73UVXWdeY4ZbF4oJ
  • Finally an apology. Over the weekend I updated my by-election table and discovered Friday’s reported 6-1 score of IFP v ANC was wrong. I’d missed two other victories so the actual score is IFP 8, ANC 1 in the wards won off the other since September last year. With the DA and IFP working closely together, there are many in KZN who will hope that beleaguered part of the country is heading for a provincial version of the Chris Pappas effect….

Sterkte.
