From SA Press Association:

Zimbabwe’s ambassador to Australia is seeking political asylum after denouncing President Robert Mugabe’s government as “illegitimate.”

Jacqueline Zwambila said Saturday she feared for her safety if she returned after Mugabe’s Zanu-PF Party won the July parliamentary elections. Zwambila, who has served in Canberra since 2009, said she had not been offered an extension or another post, and would be obliged to return after her term expires this week. Zwambila is aligned with Morgan Tsvangirai’s opposition Movement for Democratic Change.

“Once the elections of 31 July were stolen by the current government – which is illegitimate – I knew that this was the end of the line,” she told the Canberra Times newspaper. She said Mugabe’s election victory signalled the “end of the line for the people of Zimbabwe … and for people like me, who were appointed by the ex-prime minister, Morgan Tsvangirai.” Zwambila asked for a protection visa from Australia to be able to stay on with her family after her diplomatic visa expires. – SAPA-DPA
