(ANA) There is a high possibility of blackouts on Friday, Eskom said.

”The load shedding prognosis for today [Friday] remains high. Eskom will provide updates should there be changes on the power system,” the power utility said.

In recent months, Eskom has battled to keep the lights on since the collapse of one of its coal storage silos, diesel shortages, and maintenance.

On Thursday, workers who took part in an illegal strike in March protested outside the Medupi power station in Lephalale, Limpopo. Over 1700 employees were issued with suspension notices and barred from entering the premises.
The power station was intended to provide Eskom with an additional 4 800 megawatts of power capacity but the project had been delayed by about three years. Last month, suspended Eskom chief executive Tshediso Matona announced that Medupi produced power for the first time. He said 794MW from Medupi’s unit six would be fed into the national power grid within a couple of months.
