A year ago I visited the Huffington Post’s offices in New York. It was one of the highlights of forced gardening leave, and came en route to my annual course in Capitalism 101 with Warren Buffett, Charlie Munger and 30 000 Berkshire Pilgrims in Omaha. My fervent hope at that time was to bring HuffPo to South Africa. A desire that its founder Arianna Huffington shared. But, sadly, with places like Japan, France, Germany, Brazil and even Korea to conquer, little SA is a long way down the list of her company’s priorities. There may yet be a HuffPo SA. But for now, it is hard to believe that even that could have been a more exciting ride than our up-from-the-ground Biznews.com.
My reminder of the HuffPo visit came with the reality that it’s off to the US again on Tuesday. I’ll be attending a Value Investor conference on Thursday and Friday and then the Berkshire Hathaway AGM next Saturday, May 3. A week-long adventure of which four days will be spent travelling. All to listen as an 83 year old and his 90 year old sidekick swig coca cola, chew peanut brittle and answer questions for five and a half hours.
