100% White Zulu Boy with so much to teach us

By Alec Hogg

Racial stereotyping is among South Africa’s least attractive traits. After decades of Apartheid you’d think this nation that would have long ago rejected racism. But old prejudices die hard. GG Alcock’s new book, Third World Child, attacks them head on. Let’s hope it becomes a best-seller.

Alcock’s parents, both white, moved into near poverty in rural KZN when he was a lad. Home-schooled, GG and his brother Khonya were raised more Zulu than White. At 15 his father was assassinated, collateral damage in one of the area’s never-ending clan wars. This deeply honest book shows the adult Alcock as the blunt product of his environment – unconventional, opportunistic, forthright, courageous, bloodthirsty and a little “bedonnered”.

He is deeply disgusted with the hypocrisy of politicians, BEE and corrupt taxi drivers. But relates closely, and his words speak for voiceless millions doing their best to make a life in today’s tough South Africa. Because in every way except the melanin deficiency, Alcock is a 100% rural Zulu Boy. One of many trying to make it in the city.

After finishing the book, I wasn’t sure whether to celebrate or be depressed. Probably a bit of both. South Africa is sure to breed armies of Alcocks in the years ahead. Those whose existence will be living proof one should never judge a man by the colour of his skin. They can’t join this promised Rainbow Nation quickly enough.
