🔒 Boardroom Talk – Clem is back with an update to his flags – and he’ll be at BNC#6 too

By Alec Hogg

I’ve been a Clem Sunter fan for a long time. As an executive at Anglo American, he – and Bobby Godsell – was delightfully different to the business heavyweights. HFO believed philosophers were often better at tackling SA’s unique business challenges of the time than accountants or lawyers. Looking back, it’s hard to disagree.

Clem (like Bobby) wasn’t spared the tough jobs, which included running Anglos’s gold mines. He was, however, also the ideal in-house exec to work with the late Pierre Wack, drafted in from Shell’s elite London-based scenarios team. That experience turned Clem into a scenario planner for which SA should be ever grateful.

After retiring from the corporate world, the Oxford University PPE has blessed us with dozens of highly readable books examining at future scenarios – among them an uncannily accurate prediction of 9/11. Sunter, now 78, has refined his art into identifying “flags” – 11 global, five local – which point the way to the likely future.

He updated his flags for a speech this week and kindly sent me a summary of his latest thoughts. It’s on BizNews this morning – click here. Even better news, he has committed to deliver a keynote at BNC#6 in mid-March next year. More details on that lineup soon. That event is shaping into the best yet. Watch your inbox.

Sterkte.

Alec
