EFF leader Julius Malema is confident that his party will win the May 7 general election.
“We are the government-in-waiting,” he said outside a voting station in Soweto on Sunday.
“We’ll take over. We are supported by our people and the majority of youth. We think we’ll do very well.”
He said the Economic Freedom Fighters was what South Africans had been waiting for.
“People have been looking for a credible black-led alternative and that’s what we are.”
Wearing a red EFF beret and a white shirt, Malema said he wanted his organisation to grow, and that was why it was on a recruitment drive while urging people to vote in the final voter registration weekend.
He was greeted by cheers and songs outside Lamula Jubilee Secondary School when he arrived shortly before midday.
He walked into the voter registration centre, spoke to Independent Electoral Commission officials and then walked out.
Malema said he was thankful for the presence of his supporters all over the country.
On the ruling African National Congress, he said it had failed to be a peaceful organisation.
“We are always tolerant of the ANC, they are intolerant of us. If only the ANC can stop using violence.”
Malema did not comment on a City Press report that members of his party had allegedly admitted to ferrying tyres to service delivery protesters.
The newspaper reported on Saturday that a picture taken by French press agency AFP showed young people with red berets on the back of an EFF-branded bakkie apparently off-loading tyres to be burnt at a protest in Hebron, North West.
In response to the allegation, Malema said: “The ANC is intolerant of people and are using violence.”
Malema said he was not only encouraging young people to vote, but also the older citizens. He said the EFF had about 50,000 members across the country. – SAPA
