Mazda 3: Why it should be on your shortlist

Mazda 3

One of the new Mazda’s to have hit our shores is the 3. It comes in fastback form, essentially as a Mazda3 saloon – think four-door Audi A3 or Merc CLA – but one that blends hatch and saloon genres into one svelte, clean shape. For that we thank KODO, Mazda’s design language.

Providing the go is a trend-bucking 2.0 litre naturally aspirated petrol motor, linked to a six speed automatic ‘box. No turbo power here. They’ve still squeezed 121kW and 210 torques from the motor which is plenty for the average customer. More importantly they’ve kept fuel consumption to a minimum at 5.9 l/100km.

Mazda 3The chassis is very capable, up there with the class best for control and enjoyment. The wide track means the 3 feels stable while it’s steering is well-weighted, quick and accurate. The engineers have done their utmost to keep that oh-so-tricky balance between comfort and fun. They’ve definitely leaned toward the fun side, so the ride can be rough at times, but the 3 makes up for it on twisty back roads.

Mazda 3Inside you’re met with Mazda’s usual generous helping of bang for your buck. This top-of-the-range Astina comes with everything that opens and shuts; like a heads up display, cruise control, keyless go and a 7 inch multimedia screen with sat-nav and all kinds of connectivity including internet radio, Facebook and Twitter. And while we’re talking value for money, there’s a 3 year unlimited km service plan (take note fleet managers).

The interior is comparatively bland against the striking outward appearance. It’s functional though, doesn’t feel overly cheap and is well configured. The rear section might not be as big as you’d like, but the boot is cavernous; its 55 litres bigger than the hatch and therefore much more practical.

Good economy, sporty feel and nice interior round off the 3 as a great alternative to the Ford Focus, VW Golf and the rest of the non-premium gang. Make sure it’s on your shortlist.
