Recent elections in Botswana and Mauritius highlighted rare smooth power transitions in Africa, with leaders graciously conceding defeat. However, across the continent, most elections have been marred by fraud, repression, and violence. Observers criticize the African Union and regional bodies like ECOWAS for failing to uphold democratic standards. With rising coups and declining election integrity, there's concern about the state of African democracy as many leaders use illicit tactics to remain in power.
