Premium – A rare glimpse inside the Kremlin’s Troll Farms, with SA among the targets

The threat of Russian interference in SA is real. Believing this is the way to start addressing it.

I watched the furore around Cyril Ramaphosa's previously confidential affidavit on SA's now-defused Putin bomb with some concern. SA's president told the court that arresting his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, would have amounted to a declaration of war. Critics dismiss this as a foolish exaggeration. They are mistaken.

Rational minds appreciate Putin is out of control. The invasion of Ukraine was based on a falsehood. Hitler-esque interventions in Russia's military strategy point are the actions of a deluded demagogue. So, when long-time lackey Medvedev warned of an arrest triggering war, he wasn't making small talk. Thankfully Putin's withdrawal means that won't be put to the test. But that does not mean Ramaphosa lied.

With all that behind us perhaps we should focus on the reality. Many otherwise sensible fellow SA citizens have swallowed the Putin kool-aide – he is the injured party in Ukraine; that his slaughter-of-innocents 'military action' was justified; and Mad Vlad is genuinely a champion of old values that the world needs right now.
