SABC chair loses court battle against MP’s

SABC chairwoman Ellen Tshabalala on Wednesday lost her court bid to halt a parliamentary inquiry into whether she lied about her qualifications.

“Order for relief [is] refused…” said Western Cape High Court Judge Elizabeth Baartman in a judgment that lasted only a few seconds.

Baartman did not give reasons for her ruling.

Tshabalala had sought an order interdicting Parliament’s communications portfolio committee from continuing with the inquiry.

Tshabalala’s lawyers had argued MPs were conducting a disciplinary hearing, but Parliament countered saying the inquiry was part of an administrative process.

Tshabalala obtained an interim interdict on October 23 temporarily halting the inquiry.

She stated on her CV that she had a BComm degree from the University of SA (Unisa) and a post-graduate degree in labour relations.

Unisa has since stated that, according to its records, she has neither of these qualifications.
