Television presenter Simbarashe "Simba" Mhere died in a car accident near OR Tambo International Airport on Saturday, the SABC reported.

Lorraine Maisel, from Mhere's publicity company, paid tribute to 31-year-old Mhere. "He was going places. I saw him on Thursday… Simba was a gentle, kind and loving person," Maisel told the broadcaster.

Mhere became presenter of television show Top Billing after winning a presenter search in 2010.

The Inkatha Freedom Party said it was saddened by the death of television presenter Simbarashe "Simba" Mhere.

"Mhere was a talented young presenter who won the hearts of all those who watched him on Top Billing and other shows. His passing will leave a void in the SABC that will be difficult to fill," said chairman Blessed Gwala in a statement.
