The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) on Tuesday vowed to oppose bail for a truck driver involved in the crash which killed Public Service and Administration Minister Collins Chabane and two bodyguards. Court Gavel

Amukelani Rikhotso appeared before the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court in Limpopo earlier and the matter was postponed to April 10 for further investigation. The truck driver remains in custody.

The court initially set the next court date for April 6 but reconvened to change the date because April 6 is a public holiday.

Prosecutor Disemo Kgoelenya said: “The state is opposing bail.”

Chabane and Sergeants Lesiba Sekele and Lawrence Lentsoane were killed on Sunday morning when a truck allegedly made a U-turn in front of their car on the N1 between Mokopane and Polokwane.

On Tuesday, Rikhotso walked to the dock, covering his face with his jersey, and sat with his hands supporting his head as the media jostled to take photographs.

Rikhotso appeared only briefly in court, where he faces three counts of culpable homicide and one of reckless driving.

Erwin Sithole, for Rikhotso, said he would prepare for the bail application and inform the court when he was finished with consultations.

Chabane’s family members arrived at the court earlier on Tuesday.

There was a strong media presence awaiting the truck driver’s arrival in court.

Police spokeswoman Colonel Ronel Otto said previously that Rikhotso was taken to a hospital for blood tests to determine whether he had taken alcohol before the accident.

Otto could not say how long it would take for the results of the blood tests to be available.

Polokwane police cluster commander Maj-Gen Joseph Maepa, told The Star newspaper the truck’s licence disk expired last year, the driver had a pending case of driving under the influence in Ekurhuleni, Gauteng, and faces an assault case in Giyani, Limpopo.

Deputy Limpopo legislature speaker Lehlogonolo Masoga accompanied Chabane’s relatives.

When court adjourned, Chabane’s nephew Musa Chabane thanked media and members of the community for their support. SapaLogo
