Johannesburg – Allegations that the Public Investment Corporation (PIC) was funding the ANC were intended to tarnish its integrity, it said on Wednesday.

United Democratic Movement leader Bantu Holomisa lodged a complaint with the public protector on Monday, alleging the PIC had transferred R40 million into an account used to pay ANC staff members' salaries and fund the party's 104th anniversary celebrations.

According to a second allegation, R2m was transferred from the PIC account to the Harith Company for the ruling party's benefit in January.

PIC spokesperson Sekgoela Sekgoela said there was no truth to the claims.

"The PIC has not been approached by the public protector regarding these allegations. However, we will co-operate with any investigations should we be approached by the public protector," he said.

The PIC was considering its options to counter the damage the allegations had done to its reputation.

"The PIC views these allegations as a deliberate intention to cast aspersions on its integrity."

Holomisa lodged his complaint with the public protector on Monday. He said the corruption claims came from an anonymous source.

The ANC denied the allegations. – News24
