DA: Attack on Breytenbach a crude attempt to distract, ANC diversion tactic

By Naledi Shange, News24

Johannesburg – The ANC and NPA were rehashing matters against DA MP Glynnis Breytenbach to cause a diversion from the matters the DA was pursuing against the prosecuting authority’s deputy head, Nomgcobo Jiba, the party said on Sunday.

Breytenbach, a former prosecutor, and her lawyer were scheduled to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of obstruction and defeating the ends of justice.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Luvuyo Mfaku said the hearing related to an NPA investigation in 2012 in which Breytenbach was investigated for misconduct.

The DA’s James Selfe, however, said all charges against Breytenbach were traversed in disciplinary hearings and resulted in her acquittal. He accused the ANC and the NPA of using “cheap political gimmick to mask its own record of dealing with its own questionable characters”.

“Now, years after the fact, the NPA wants to revive matters that have already been dealt with. This is on the back of President Zuma’s capitulation in the Nkandla Constitutional Court matter on Tuesday… and the [Sudan President Omar] al-Bashir saga before the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) on Friday.

The DA would continue to support Breytenbach.

“We also regard her as innocent until proven guilty and stand by her,” Selfe said.

Meanwhile, the party hoped to get the Western Cape High Court to agree that Zuma failed to act over several grievances against Jiba. – News24
