Johannesburg –Β Gauteng police have taken one person into custody and seized 11 shotguns from security guards at the Tshwane University of Technology after a shotgun was discharged injuring one person.
According to the police’s Twitter feed, the incident was allegedly an accident during another day of confrontations in the wider #FeesMustFall protests.
TUT’s management also issued a warning to protesting students that it was applying for an interdict so that classes could continue.
It said it wanted to assist students to get through what is left of the academic year and hoped to be able to open on Friday.
Groups of students have been protesting since September 18 when Higher Education and Training Minister Blade Nzimande announced that the fees of students from homes with an income below R600 000 a year would not be increased. Some students have rejected this, saying there should be no fees at all.
Protests and clashes with guards and police have continued since then. – News24
