DA majority in Western Cape by-elections
The Democratic Alliance retained three of four wards in the Western Cape by-elections, the Electoral Commission of SA's (IEC) regional office said on Thursday.
Wards in Gansbaai and Grabouw were retained by the DA, while a ward in Sandbaai was also retained uncontested after by-elections held on Wednesday, the commission's Carol Austin said.
The ANC retained a ward in Zwelihle, Hermanus, after facing the Economic Freedom Fighters for the first time in the region.
EFF candidate Samuel Nywebeni made little impact in Zwelihle ward 5, attracting only 11.9 percent of the votes.
The ward was won by the ANC's Sicelo Gxamesi with 88.1 percent of the vote.
The DA's Lydia Matomele won ward 11 (Grabouw) with 55 percent.
Ward 2 (Gansbaai) was won by Riana de Coning of the DA with 74.95 percent of the votes.
Ward 7, Sandbaai, was uncontested as the DA's David Botha was the only candidate nominated.
