First platinum, now engineering: NUMSA’s 250 000 on strike Tuesday
It's official. Engineering union NUMSA is calling its 250 000 members out on an "indefinite" strike from Tuesday, July 1. With a membership three times the size of platinum union AMCU, the implications for an already punch-drunk South African economy are obvious. Ditto for its arthimetically-challenged members. After five months of earning nothing, the "100% or bust" AMCU leadership eventually settled at an average increase of 8.3% for the next three years. The pay foregone will take years for members to recoup. This looks like being more of the same. But fired up rank and file members aren't thinking of the economic realities. Like AMCU, the NUMSA leadership has long been spoiling for a fight. It remains to be seen whether engineering employers will have the resources and grit to see it out to the bitter end like the three platinum companies did. – AH

Workers at Eskom are generally not allowed to strike by law because they are considered to provide essential services. A downing of tools there by NUMSA members could hamper the utility's ability to keep the lights on, already a daily battle because of razor-thin margins between power supply and demand.
