The two men, aged 29 and 38, drove a VIVA fuel logistics truck and were travelling from Rustenburg to Centurion near Pretoria.
According to Constable Lucky Matome of Tarlton SAPS, it was believed the driver went to a filling station in Tarlton where he sold about 300 litres of diesel.
"The police received an anonymous tip-off about these suspicious activities. Officers responded and upon their arrival the driver of the truck allegedly offered the officers R1 000, although he was warned that his actions constitute an offence, but their warning fell on deaf ears," Matome said in a statement.
After the driver offered the police the money, he apparently offered an even bigger amount – this time R4 320 – for them to look the other way.
"The driver could not give nor produce any form of proof that could have certified his actions as legal. He was then arrested and charged with theft and bribery."
The owner was charged with possession of suspected stolen diesel and bribery.
Both suspects will appear in the Krugersdorp Magistrate's Court soon. – News24
