JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) – South Africa's Sibanye Gold, which says it wants to expand into platinum, said on Thursday it was not interested in Impala Platinum's Marula mine.

Implats earlier announced on Thursday announced its intention to sell Marula, which produced 78,500 ounces if platinum in its 2014 financial year, as part of an effort to build cash.

"It is probably too small for our purposes," said Sibanye spokesman James Wellsted.

Wellsted said Sibanye remained interested in "more meaningful assets," such as Anglo American Platinum's Rustenburg and Union mines.
