Liliesleaf bootcamp: Nelson Mandela school SleepOut brand ambassadors prepare to #RiseToTheChallenge

From CEO SleepOut™:

The CEO SleepOut™ Movement hosted School Brand Ambassadors from across the country at a Bootcamp on Friday 30th June in preparation for The Nelson Mandela School Sleepout™ – Empowered by Liliesleaf: For The Tomorrow Trust taking place on the 18th July 2018.

Kat Ncala, Brand Ambassador for the School SleepOut™ would like to see 100 schools spend the night outdoors on their school grounds raising as many donations as possible for the country’s schools in need.

The SleepOut™ Movement has raised more money than any other single overnight event in South Africa’s history – get involved and play your part! Get your school to participate in The Nelson Mandela School SleepOut™ and play your part in raising donations for less fortunate schools.

Kat Ncala, speaking at the Bootcamp stated, “I am excited to be part of this #GlobalMovement that is equipping young people with an understanding of the importance of philanthropy and giving back – we are ‘Agents of Change’ able to get the message out quickly. Our actions are part of a domino effect that helps not only under-resourced schools but we are also the ‘voice’ of the homeless during the School SleepOut™”.

The School Ambassador Bootcamp hosted by Liliesleaf included a visit to Thabisang Primary School in Soweto which is one of the Satellite Beneficiaries of the School SleepOut™, this was followed by a visit to Rosebank Primary School to experience the Tomorrow Trust Holiday School programme that provides disadvantaged learners with holistic support throughout their educational journey.

Janyce Dalziel, The CEO SleepOut™ Trustee accompanied the School Ambassadors on their Bootcamp visits, “It is moving to see a school like Thabisang Primary School that is so well run on so little! It is inspirational to witness the active participation of everyone involved in the School SleepOut™ Event from the Brand Ambassadors, to the Scholars, Parents, School Principals and representatives of the School Governing Body.

On their return to Liliesleaf the School Ambassadors received presentations from The CEO SleepOut™ Movement team giving them an in-depth understanding of the importance of philanthropy and giving back to their communities. This was then followed by a tour of Liliesleaf which is one of the Primary Beneficiaries of The 2018 SleepOut™ Movement enabling them to continue to preserve our heritage as an important symbolic presence of our country’s struggle and through their educational programmes inspire young audiences to face today’s challenges.

School Ambassador, Lindokuhle Sibanda a Grade 7 pupil at Galway Primary School enthused, “My involvement in The 2018 School SleepOut™ is very important because I like the fact that I will help someone to go to bed on a full stomach, send a child to school and provide for a child in need. I am looking forward to helping someone less fortunate than we are.”

Parent of one of the School Ambassadors, Tasneem Nagdee, states, “The School Ambassador programme raises awareness of empathy among scholars. Participating in projects like this that makes a difference in society is so important for the youth of today, who will become the future leaders of our country.”

The most important part of the programme started in the evening with the screening of an outdoor movie – Act of Defiance and then the School Ambassadors got to experience what it is like to be homeless by spending the night outdoors in the cold with only cardboard boxes and some soup to keep them warm. All of this in preparation for their own School SleepOut™ Events taking place on what would have been Madiba’s 100th birthday. Items collected during these events will be donated to an under-resourced school chosen from the School SleepOut™ Event’s List nominated by EduWeek working with The Tomorrow Trust.

Schools from Provinces across the country have registered to join in The Nelson Mandela School SleepOut™ – Empowered by Liliesleaf: For The Tomorrow Trust. Under-Resourced Schools will receive the items and or services collected by the School SleepOut™ Events that form the Wish List from which participants can select during the Registration Process. EduWeek is a Stakeholder Partner to The School SleepOut ™ Event and working with The Tomorrow Trust have nominated a number of under-resourced schools – eight in Gauteng, two in Western Cape, four in Kwa-Zulu Natal and two each in Eastern Cape; Limpopo; Free-State; North West; Northern Cape and Mpumulanga.
