Political will and narrative around forests continue…but more needed – COP27

Alongside other NGOs, we at WWF want to keep nature on the agenda at COP27 and build on the political will that came out of Glasgow. It’s good to see the political will and the narrative around forests continues but we need more.

Excerpts from the interview with Fran Raymond Price, Global Forest Practice Lead at WWF

Ensuring nature is on the agenda at COP

We at WWF and many other NGOs want to ensure nature is on the agenda at COP and we want to build on the political will that came out of Glasgow. It’s been good to see that political will and the narrative around us continues but we need more. We need greater ambition, we need more finance to be available to people on the ground. So, those are some of the things we are prioritising here.

Catalysing action at COP27

We need these government commitments, we need governments to form partnerships with the private sector, we need private sector ambition. There is a big road map coming out of this COP. And we need this road map to be even more ambitious than it is; to be aligned with 1.5 degrees. So, those commodity traders are absolutely critical when we think about global trade and also land use and at one end.

Big commitments made around restoring Africa

We have a big push right now on restoration particularly in Africa, which has the most degradation of any continent on Earth. There have been some big commitments here regarding supporting restoration in Africa. We are focusing on nine countries and helping to get restoration going on the ground. That focus on implementation and action is important.
