Classical investment theory is based on buying shares of companies that leverage human potential best and use this advantage to deliver superior returns. Amazon, Facebook and Google continue to prove that point. But sometimes even the dumbest of inanimate objects beats the more obvious opportunities – as gold has been doing this year. Up by a quarter in US Dollars since January, the yellow metal's price broke above $1 350 an ounce over the weekend as its insurance attributes continue to find new converts. Gold does best when it is perceived as a safe place to stash cash during troubled times. And right now, with angry citizens around the world dumping on the political establishment and no clear economic end game for Quantitative Easing, nerves are certainly jangling. The holdings increased 37 tons last week as investors reacted to the U.K.'s vote, and swelled in five months out of six in the first half.Bullion prices climbed to the highest level in more than two years in June as investors absorbed the implications of the U.K. result, adding to a rally that's been driven by the Fed's hesitation in raising borrowing costs and the spread of negative rates in Europe and Japan.
