Operating under the handle @goolamv, he was a digital phenomenon — a faceless commentator who wielded 280 characters like a scalpel, dissecting the corrupt and the complacent with uncanny precision. Today, that voice is silent.Reports of Goolam's death in a Sandton hotel room have sent shockwaves through the body politic. The official narrative whispers of suicide, of a troubled soul overwhelmed by the pressures of online notoriety. But those of us who watch the shadows of this country lengthen know better than to accept the first draft of history, especially when it is written in invisible ink.My colleague Chris Steyn, in a riveting interview with Action Society’s Juanita du Preez on BizNews TV, has already pulled at the loose threads of this tragedy. They speak of a "staged" scene in the hotel room where Goolam’s body was found — brand new school shoes, an empty laptop, the clinking tableau of vodka and beer bottles arranged just so. It reads less like a tragedy and more like a warning.But I want to talk about the man behind the handle, or at least, the man I communicated with in the encrypted quiet of Direct Messages on X..We had been courting Goolam for an interview for nearly two years. As early as June 2024, I reached out to him: "We are putting together interviews of emerging thought leaders," I wrote, offering him the cloak of anonymity — disguised voice, hidden face — so he could speak freely on our platform.His response was polite, promising to "come back to you soon". But the walls were already closing in.By July 2024, the heat was intensifying. I reached out again, noting his "active few weeks" and suggesting a text-based interview to circumvent the dangers. His reply was chilling. He told me he had fled the country because a powerful figure — he named Iqbal Survé (Survé's reply can be found at the bottom of this article), proprietor of media group Independent Newspapers — had allegedly placed a price of one million rands on his head. "Let me settle down here for a few days," he wrote, a digital fugitive hunting for safety.Think about that. A social media commentator, a citizen journalist armed only with a smartphone and a conscience, forced into exile by a bounty on his life.Goolam wasn't just posting memes; he was posting evidence. He was disrupting the comfortable narratives of the powerful. That made him extremely unpopular among those who yearn to turn South Africa into a mirror of some countries to our north, where the politically connected elites live like modern emperors by pillaging national resources. In March 2025, he messaged me again, praising BizNews for talking about "the right things". He was amplifying our work, downloading our videos to ensure maximum reach because, as he noted—citing AI tools like Grok and ChatGPT—native video travels further than links. "The messages are so important I feel more people should see it," he said.He wasn't stealing content; he was weaponising truth.And now, he is gone..The speculation surrounding his death is not merely gossip; it is a necessity. Juanita du Preez raised the terrifying possibility that Goolam was "taken out" because he threatened to expose his own funders, or perhaps because he had become too effective a thorn in the side of a rival faction. My fearless colleague Steyn, whose understanding of the dark side was honed through decades as one of SA’s very best investigative journalists, noted Goolam’s "uncannily accurate" predictions, suggesting he had access to high-level intelligence.Was he a paid operative? Perhaps. In South Africa, everyone seems to be somebody’s spectral agent. But did he deserve to die in a lonely hotel room, his death very possibly dressed up to look like a capitulation?This brings me to a point that I hope reaches the ears of the fellow South African who owns the very platform Goolam used. Pretoria-born Elon Musk, who still carries a Green Mamba, has often described X as the world's town square, a place for unvarnished free speech. But what happens when the town crier is silenced not by an algorithm, but by an assassin?If Goolam was indeed murdered — if this was a hit ordered by those who feared his reach — then this is not just a South African tragedy. It is a global warning. It suggests that the digital space is no longer a sanctuary for dissent but a hunting ground for those who wish to suppress it.The anomalies in that hotel room demand answers. The "blacked out" face in the leaked photos, the clenched fist that mysteriously relaxed in subsequent images—these are the hallmarks of a cover-up, not a closure.Goolam remained loyal to President Ramaphosa to the end, often directing his ire at the RET faction and its allies. Was this loyalty his undoing? Did he fly too close to the sun of state secrets? Or was he simply a man who knew too much about the machinery of South Africa’s well documented captured state?"I don't want to look like I am stealing your content," he told me in one of his last messages. He didn't steal anything. Goolam gave. He gave voice to the frustrations of millions, and he gave the corrupt sleepless nights.We at BizNews will not let this story die in a Sandton hotel room. We are still listening..When asked for comment, Iqbal Survé responded with the following.That is complete rubbish and fiction and regrettably typical of the lies that Goolam peddled.It is for that reason that I and many others filled civil and criminal cases against him so that he can account in a court of law. Unfortunately his death has robbed all the people that he defamed of the opportunity to clear their names.I am aware that Setumo Stone of Sunday World , Lindiwe Sisulu , and many others filed Crimean Injuria cases against him. He faced criminal arrest and serious jail time due to his defamation.I don’t know the status of these cases , however , I understand from media reports that that law enforcement had asked him for a warning statement a week before he apparently overdosed from cocaine and alcohol.In addition there are many civil case against him for defamation but the sheriff could not trace him as he was in hiding.The reality is that Goolam was an addict, whose habit was paid for by powerful people and politicians and more than likely his criminality caught up with him.
