According to them, if Pretoria does not revise key ideological policies the United States is prepared to scale back its relationship with South Africa including critical trade agreements like AGOACorné Mulder of the Freedom Front Plus Theo de Jager from the Southern African Agri Initiative and Gerhard Papenfuss of NEASA spent ten days in the United States meeting with officials from the White House State Department Congress and the business community. They say the visit was not just symbolic. It was an attempt to place the Afrikaner perspective and broader economic concerns directly on the tableThe trio say they did not assemble the delegation themselves but were invited by US stakeholders who felt the ANC’s international engagements had not reflected the full picture. The meetings were extensive covering agriculture investment race-based laws and South Africa’s shifting foreign policyAt the centre of the trip were four clear demands from US officials. These were described by some as ultimatums and are now understood to be prerequisites for any normalisation of relations between South Africa and the United StatesThe four conditionsAccording to Mulder the White House and Trump administration laid out four pointsFirst rural and farm attacks must be declared a priority crime and investigated by elite police units like the HawksSecond the ANC itself not just the government must publicly denounce the controversial Kill the Boer chantThird land expropriation must not occur without market-based compensation and due legal processFourth US companies must be exempt from BEE requirements if they are to continue investing in South Africa“These are not conditions we came up with” said Mulder “They are what the Americans want and they made that very clear”Business warningPapenfuss who leads the National Employers Association took a firm stance on BEE and race-based laws. He told US officials there are over 140 pieces of legislation in South Africa that exclude white South Africans from full participation in the economy. In particular he highlighted the Employment Equity Act and the practice of appointing based on racial quotas rather than merit“They couldn’t believe their ears” Papenfuss told BizNews editor Alec Hogg “The idea that a businessman must sit at his computer and use a spreadsheet to determine the race and gender of new hires shocked them”He warned that foreign investors would not tolerate being forced to give up 51 percent of their businesses to comply with BEE requirementsAgricultural voice heardFor De Jager the trip was also deeply personal. Representing farmers he said the moment the Kill the Boer chant was shown in the White House marked a turning point“There is no grey area for us” he said “We have tried the courts we have tried local remedies and now we are taking the fight to the international level”He confirmed that US policymakers were deeply informed about the South African situation and still open to continued trade. Contrary to rumours AGOA is not yet off the table and there may still be time to preserve it“They are not misled” said De Jager “They know who the good actors are and who are in it for self enrichment”Hope amid warningWhile the ANC shows no signs of backing down the delegation insists they came back with a message of hope not despair. There is interest in trade. There is demand for South African products. But the policy environment is scaring capital awayDe Jager said American buyers told him they would purchase as much as he could grow on his farm including lychees which are in high demand in the US. But he warned that government policies could eventually block farmers like him from even obtaining business licences“If BE based licencing ever becomes reality Americans won’t touch our exports” he saidWhat nextThe message was clear. If South Africa wants to maintain access to the US market and restore its reputation it must act now. The ANC’s ideological rigidity may please its base but it is alienating international partners and risking economic collapseMulder said the 9 July deadline for tariffs was fast approaching and warned that South Africa’s hopes of continued trade would not survive without action. He said it was time for the electorate to understand that policies like BEE do not hurt white South Africans alone but disproportionately affect black youth and the unemployed“This isn’t about Afrikaners” he said “We want to see a prosperous South Africa where everyone benefits”A new dialogueThe group was adamant they were not there to ask for special treatment. They proposed a new value based relationship between South Africa and the US grounded in equal opportunity sound policy and mutual respectIn their final remarks to BizNews all three said they were willing to return to Washington and continue the dialogue. Mulder said rebuilding trust is crucial and warned that if the ANC continues on its current path alternatives including a rethink of South Africa’s internal political arrangement may become necessary“We are Africans” said Mulder “And we are determined to make this country succeed”The clock is now ticking.
