In this BizNews interview, Alec Hogg sat down with Toni Volschenk, founder and CEO of iLaunch, South Africa’s top woman-led recruitment agency. Their conversation unpacked the evolution of the modern workforce, the growing role of technology in recruitment, and how iLaunch is shaping the future of talent acquisition in South Africa.
From Tech Start-up to Talent Powerhouse
Toni Volschenk’s entrepreneurial journey began within the Bumblebee Group, a traditional software development company where she played a key role in launching Moby Wash, a mobile car wash app. It was this early experience with tech innovation and business systems that sparked her passion for creating agile, people-centred solutions.
In 2018, seeing a gap in the market for specialised tech recruitment, Volschenk founded iLaunch. What started as a small operation has grown into a formidable team of 180 consultants operating across South Africa, servicing industries including financial services, petroleum, public sector, and telecommunications.
“We like to think of ourselves as career matchmakers,” said Volschenk. “Our role goes beyond filling vacancies - it’s about aligning career goals, company culture, and long-term success.”
Adapting to a Changing Workforce
The world of work has changed dramatically in recent years, a transformation accelerated by the pandemic. Volschenk noted that the shift towards contracting and consulting roles has become a dominant trend, particularly in tech. Unlike the traditional permanent-placement model of old, many companies now seek skilled individuals on shorter-term contracts - sometimes three, six, or twelve months - depending on the nature of their projects.
“These are highly skilled professionals choosing the flexibility and higher earning potential of independent consulting,” she explained.
Remote and hybrid work models have also played a significant role in shaping expectations. “Immediately after COVID, talent was calling the shots,” Volschenk said. “But in the last 12 months, we’ve seen more companies revert to in-office requirements - some even mandating five days a week.”
She pointed out that while the change brings challenges - especially for working parents - teams that value accountability and communication can make hybrid work successful. “We’ve kept a hybrid model for our own internal team. It works because we trust each other, and everyone takes ownership.”
AI: Challenge or Opportunity?
Artificial intelligence is no longer a buzzword - it’s an operational reality. iLaunch has seen a marked increase in companies seeking AI skills, but many don’t know where to begin. In one case, the iLaunch team partnered with a client’s executive team to explore the types of roles and competencies required to begin their AI transformation.
“We created a market snapshot - researching candidate expectations, salary benchmarks, and availability of roles like AI engineers and AI leads. It helped our client realign their expectations and build the right team.”
When asked if AI could eventually replace recruiters, Volschenk acknowledged the growing use of AI tools but stressed the human element that remains central to successful hiring. “AI can’t yet assess cultural fit or read body language in the way an experienced recruiter can. That personal, empathetic touch matters.”
A Woman-Led Advantage
With a team that is 95% women, iLaunch proudly embraces its identity as a woman-led organisation - something Volschenk believes gives them an edge.
“There’s an unspoken understanding among us - many are working mothers juggling multiple roles. That shared experience fosters empathy, collaboration, and an ability to get the job done efficiently,” she said.
Volschenk added that male team members are equally supportive, and the balance of perspectives enhances their approach to both clients and candidates.
Looking Ahead
As iLaunch approaches its eighth anniversary, Volschenk’s ambitions remain bold. “We want to grow our consultant base to 1,000. But beyond numbers, it’s about impact. We might directly employ 180 people, but we’re affecting the lives of their families too. That responsibility drives us.”
iLaunch continues to champion people-first recruitment, blending technology, empathy, and strategy to redefine what it means to connect talent with opportunity in a digital age.
