MTN'S R6bn buyback swagger can't hide the Iran scar

MTN has managed an unusual trick: absorb a R3.9 billion hit from its war-zone exposure to Iran, then announce a R6 billion share buyback in the same breath. Strip out Iran, forex and hyperinflation, and the numbers look stellar - but investors can’t simply wish away the geopolitical damage. Nigeria and Ghana are powering growth, while South Africa remains a drag. Meanwhile, Cell C’s turnaround offers a revealing contrast in telecom fortunes. With Iran, Sudan and the Nigerian tower deal still unresolved, MTN’s confidence raises a bigger question: is this disciplined capital allocation, or swagger before the next storm?.By Alec Hogg.MTN Group told its shareholders two things in the same breath when releasing its half-year results on SENS this morning: it dropped R3.9 billion on a mobile network sitting inside a live war zone, but despite the well-telegraphed Iranian setback, it's buying back R6 billion of its own shares anyway.That's the back story for the report on its six months: not the Irancell writedown everyone saw coming after the trading statement three weeks ago, but the swagger that followed.MTN wants you to look at one number first. ‘Adjusted’ headline earnings per share, the measure that strips out Iran, forex swings and hyperinflation accounting. It jumped 21.3% to 793 cents for the six months to June. Impressive. On Paper.When, as management urges, you take Irancell out of the picture, this is a genuinely strong business: service revenue up 17.5% in constant currency to R115.3 billion, EBITDA margin up an astonishing 4.4 percentage points to a record 47.1%, free cash flow up 32.7% to R11.1 billion. Nigeria and Ghana did the heavy lifting, with Ghana's service revenue up 32.3% and EBITDA up 40%.Taken together, CEO Ralph Mupita and his team have a business that, excluding Iran, would be the envy of most global telcos.But unfortunately for their fantasy, Iran is a very real part of the MTN story. And it is causing proper damage.So the rational observer must focus on reality instead. Headline earnings per share fell 5.8% to 615 cents. Basic earnings per share collapsed 26.1% to 404 cents. A 213-cents-a-share non-cash impairment on the 49%-held Irancell joint venture (R3.9 billion in total) had the most impact, with a 126-cent forex loss and a 52-cent hyperinflation charge piling on the pain.MTN can no longer (ever?) touch R886 million in Irancell receivables, frozen by US sanctions on Iran's central bank, and its remaining equity stake, with a book value of R10.5 billion, is essentially worthless. The group has now committed to walking away entirely. This isn't a one-off any more. It's the third consecutive set of numbers in which Iran has torched a chunk of MTN's bottom line, and "exit in due course" is starting to sound like a promise investors have heard before..No interim dividend was declared for the second year running. Instead, MTN is launching a share buyback of up to 31 million shares, roughly a tenth of the outstanding equity, starting immediately.Call it what it is: a board that knows its balance sheet can carry it. Net debt sits at just 0.3 times EBITDA, and it chose to spend on its own share price rather than hand cash to shareholders while a war-zone wound is still open. Shrewd capital allocation, dressed up as swagger.Closer to home, the soft spot remains South Africa.Service revenue grew just 1.5% here, the EBITDA margin slipping 2.2 points to 34.3% (13 percentage points below the overall group number), fintech revenue fell 16.3%, and voice dropped 10.2%. This is largely self-inflicted, and deliberately so: MTN is unwinding its riskier airtime-advance book, and the prepaid base shrank 4.5% in the second quarter as a result. Correct medicine. Still painful to swallow.Cell C's year-end results to end May landed four days earlier, on Friday. Worth remembering: its network leans heavily on wholesale capacity MTN itself hosts, under commercial arrangements Mupita's group describes as "confidential and ongoing" negotiations. Cell C reported revenue of R12.6 billion for the year to May, with EBITDA of R5.5 billion that looks, on the surface, spectacular. But it isn't real. Strip out the one-off accounting gain from folding the Comm Equipment Company acquisition into the base, and underlying EBITDA comes in at R2.38 billion: an 18.8% margin, just over half MTN's SA number.The genuine Cell C story is a turnaround, not a mirage. Net debt-to-EBITDA improved from 4.29 times to 1.56 times following November's restructuring and JSE listing. Prepaid revenue grew 9.7%, subscribers rose 19.1% to 8.1 million, and wholesale (hosting other MVNOs on Cell C's own network capacity) grew 20%. No dividend either, though Cell C never promised one at listing.MTN can absorb a R3.9 billion war casualty and still hand cash back to shareholders, via buybacks, the same morning. Cell C needed a full balance-sheet rescue and an IPO just to get its leverage under two times. MTN is managing abundance. Cell C is still climbing out of scarcity, and doing it rather well. Neither is paying a dividend right now, but MTN is choosing not to. Cell C doesn't have the option yet.Over the past year, MTN's share price has climbed roughly 31%, swinging between R133 and R237 as investors priced in Nigeria's recovery, Ghana's boom and then, repeatedly, flinched at Iran and Sudan. That range tells you the market hasn't decided whether MTN is a growth story or a geopolitical liability with excellent margins attached.Nigeria's Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission is still to sign off on MTN selling down its Nigerian IHS towers stake. Iran and Sudan remain open wounds. Buyback swagger is easy to announce on results day. The question is whether MTN still has room for it once the Iran exit is actually closed, rather than merely declared.
