Guptas are back in SA – “they’re very much South Africans” – Spokesman

If one takes Gupta family spokesman Gary Naidoo’s words (below) at face value, the Zupta comeback is now complete. After the crony capitalist Gupta brothers resigned from boards of their SA companies and did their famous midnight flit to a half a billion rand mansion in Dubai, it looked like the country was rid of the Indian immigrants, That cleared the way for an ANC investigation into allegations of “state capture” by two would-be cabinet ministers. Also, globally admired Public Protector Thuli Madonsela announced she would also be looking into the family. But despite SA banks closing all Gupta related accounts and lots of other evidence emerging, including Carte Blanche’s brilliant Eskom-related expose last week, the bad pennies are apparently back. Whether this is part of a brazening it out strategy or a genuine belief that they are innocent of all allegations matters not. The ANC’s investigation into the Guptas never got out the starting stalls and Madonsela’s cash-starved unit hasn’t got the resources to do its duty. Which is all very well, except, one wonders, what about the attempted takeover of Treasury by Gupta associates that sparked Nenegate? Or Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas’s pointed allegations? Or the even more specific ones made by Vytjie Mentor? And who is protecting Eskom Group Executive Matshela Koko after being exposed on national television as a blatant Gupta-protecting liar? Does the ANC simply ignore all this in the name of party unity? And will voters buy the story that it’s all a conspiracy by “white monopoly capital”? South Africa deserves better than this. – Alec Hogg

Cape Town – The Gupta brothers’ friendship with President Jacob Zuma has been made a “little more difficult” since allegations of state capture emerged this year.

Gupta spokesperson Gary Naidoo told Fin24 that the Guptas continue to have a relationship with Zuma.

“Naturally, it doesn’t help with media reports tainting the relationship and throwing out wild accusations,” he told Fin24 in a telephonic interview on Saturday.

“I wouldn’t say it’s strained, but it’s one that’s made a little more difficult now to engage in terms of a friendship,” he said. “But yes, it’s been a challenging time for the Guptas and they just want the business to go on.”

The Guptas have majority shares in Oakbay Investments, which owns The New Age newspaper, ANN7 TV news channel, Sahara and Optimum coal mine. They also have shares in Oakbay Resources and Energy, which owns the mining company Shiva.

The Guptas resigned this year from all positions after their auditor KPMG, their JSE sponsor Sasfin and all South Africa’s top banks cut ties and blacklisted the firm.

This occurred as the Guptas’ friendship with Zuma came into the spotlight with allegations of state capture.

Zuma’s son Duduzane is a business partner of the Guptas, which highlights the level of trust the families share between themselves.

Allegations that the Guptas hand-picked Mosebenzi Zwane to be Mines Minister and Des van Rooyen to be Finance Minister intensified when deputy finance minister Mcebisi Jonas claimed they offered him the role before Van Rooyen was chosen. The Guptas, Zwane, Van Rooyen and Zuma all deny these allegations.

“The (Gupta) family has taken quite a bit of strain,” Naidoo said. “They’re a very private family (with) very traditional family values and (have a) close family knit.

“It’s been really tough on them,” he said. “They have children that are school going and it’s not easy on the children to go through verbal abuse of what’s picked out in the media on the family.”

Media reports speculated that the Guptas had left the country for good earlier this year, while last week a news report alluded to the Guptas taking money out of the country.

A source told a Sunday newspaper that teams from the SA Reserve Bank and Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) had asked the Indian Bank of Baroda for documents on deposits made by the Gupta family into their accounts in the bank.

The money trail apparently stops in these banks, which means the money might have been taken to an offshore account, which a government source told the newspaper is likely in Dubai.

The source told the Sunday Times that the only conclusion one could make is “that the money is going to be taken somewhere else”.

Naidoo denied the reports.

Guptas are ‘very much South Africans’

“The media made wild accusations of money leaving the country, of being taken out of the country in large amounts, which is physically impossible,” he said.

“They’ve made mention of the Gupta family leaving the country,” he added. “One of the sons of the Gupta family was getting married and the reason for them being out of the country was for the wedding.

“They’ve subsequently come back to the country,” said Naidoo. “They’re very much South Africans and they continue to stay South Africans. They believe in South Africa, they believe in the people, they have a responsibility, which they’ve shown clearly to their staff.

“It’s only when the Gupta family started entering into sectors of industry that were predominantly controlled by monopolies that we see an attack on the family.” – Fin24
