For more information and tickets, click here..By Kerry Lanaghan.Listen to this story instead:.The Chairperson of Parliament’s Police Committee, Ian Cameron, has launched a blistering critique of the South African Police Service (SAPS) following the acquittal of eight VIP Protection Unit officers - dubbed the #BlueLightMafia - by an internal disciplinary panel. Smile 90.4 FM published a report of the officers, who were filmed in July 2023, brutally assaulting civilians on the N1 highway in Johannesburg. SAPS cleared the officers of wrongdoing, sparking public outrage and renewed calls for urgent police reform.Calling it “a shameful day” for the SAPS, Cameron condemned the outcome as a “flagrant failure of justice.” He added that the incident represents a systemic collapse in police accountability. “The institution that is supposed to uphold the law has instead protected those who so blatantly violated it on camera, in full public view, with South Africa watching,” he said.Despite national outrage and irrefutable video evidence showing the officers viciously attacking unarmed civilians - one of whom was beaten unconscious - all eight were returned to duty within months. A Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA) request revealed that the disciplinary process was riddled with procedural delays, including repeated postponements by union representatives from POPCRU and SAPU, strategic sick leave on key hearing dates, and the replacement of union reps mid-process. Over R112,000 was spent on the chairperson of the disciplinary panel alone.“This was not a process aimed at justice. It was an exercise in avoidance, manipulation, and institutional protectionism,” Cameron said, accusing SAPS and its affiliated unions of orchestrating delays to protect the accused.Cameron reiterated his commitment to holding SAPS accountable in a strongly worded post on X. Speaking from Randburg Court, where the officers face criminal charges, he noted: “Despite clear footage, national outrage, and the trauma inflicted, they’re back in uniform. No accountability and no justice in terms of the so-called disciplinary accountability.”He also revealed that POPCRU had called for his removal as chairperson, a move he dismissed outright. “They will not dictate to us. We are not their rubber stamp,” he said. “Oversight is not incitement. Criticism is not misconduct. Accountability is not negotiable.”Cameron has pledged to summon the Minister of Police to appear before Parliament to explain the failed disciplinary process. He also plans to introduce new legislation to close loopholes in SAPS disciplinary procedures and clarify police use-of-force guidelines. “It was a test of institutional will, and SAPS failed it,” he said.On 16 July, the Police Portfolio Committee will convene to specifically focus on legislative and litigation-based reforms to address the accountability crisis within SAPS. “We remain hopeful that the criminal proceedings will be upheld with the integrity and independence justice demands,” Cameron added.For the victims of the N1 assault, justice remains elusive. “This decision sends them a cruel message: you don’t matter, even when the whole country saw what happened to you,” Cameron said.As public confidence in SAPS continues to erode, the #BlueLightMafia case remains a grim reminder of how far the police force must go to regain public trust. Cameron’s message is clear: “We will not let this be swept under the rug.”
