In a press briefing today, Democratic Alliance spokesperson on police, Ian Cameron, described the unfolding scandal as a “crisis of credibility” and called for sweeping reforms to restore public trust in law enforcement.Cameron noted that Mkhwanazi’s revelations, if accurate, shed light on why criminality in South Africa continues to escalate. He pointed to systemic corruption, political interference, and abuse of power within SAPS, particularly in Crime Intelligence, as reasons for erasing trust in the criminal justice system. “We cannot allow criminals to masquerade as police officers any longer,” Cameron said. The DA has now formally requested an urgent parliamentary debate on the scandal's implications, and the relevant committee will summon all implicated parties. Cameron reiterated a call for a full skills and lifestyle audit of all senior SAPS officials, beginning with those in Crime Intelligence, and said decisive consequence management was overdue. In 2023 alone, over 5,000 police officers were arrested, and 4,000 remain in service - a figure Cameron labelled a sign of “a culture of impunity.”To address the crisis, Cameron outlined several immediate proposals:A commission of inquiry with a fixed timeline.Freezing and independent review of all implicated case dockets.Independent lifestyle and skills audits of all SAPS senior managers.Full vetting and reconfiguration of the Crime Intelligence division.Increased funding and independence for the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).Cameron also flagged unresolved misconduct at the Philippi Training Academy and raised concerns about the continued accreditation of a private security firm allegedly linked to tenderpreneur and murder accused Vusimusi “Cat” Matlala. Though the link remains unverified, Cameron confirmed it is under formal parliamentary investigation and accused the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA) of failing to uphold its legal obligations. An article on Vusimusi Matlala’s case can be read here. While welcoming President Cyril Ramaphosa’s promise to address the matter upon his return from Brazil, Cameron urged urgency. “Words without action only deepen the erosion of trust,” he warned. The DA maintains that unless SAPS undergoes a comprehensive overhaul, particularly in its top ranks, it will remain vulnerable to corruption, criminal capture, and systemic failure to deliver justice.
