The post opened after several high-profile candidates, mainly from the private sector, declined the DA’s invitation to stand, citing the city’s dire condition and the modest R1.5 million annual salary as major deterrents.Johannesburg, once touted as Africa’s economic powerhouse, is now infamous for crumbling infrastructure, multiday water and electricity outages, and a municipal workforce that has grown by 86% since 2010 despite decreasing service delivery.
