The DA duo debate: Maimane and James and their differing views
The americanised and televised debate between DA contenders Mmusi Maimane and Wilmot James took place on kykNet last night and although I didn't sit down to watch it, the following article from News24 provides some fascinating insights into the characters of the contenders. Navigating constitutional rights is always a tricky, convoluted issue. Take for example the recent expulsion of Wits SRC president, Mcebo Dlamini, who professed on social media his adoration of Adolf Hitler. I've been keeping up-to-date with this debacle and many comments from students state that Dlamini has the constitutional right to freedom of speech and therefore his expulsion was unfair. But then again, no right is absolute, and when you play with fire, expect to get burned. I believe it's important to encourage debate in all forms – whether it's on social media discussing freedom of speech or between James and Maimane on national television. Differing on opinions is a good thing – it is needed for a healthy democracy. The DA seems to be on the right path, that's for sure. – Tracey Ruff
