Rory McIlroy held his nerve and fought off a brilliant challenge from Sergio Garcia and Rickie Fowler to win his first Open Championship in a captivating final round at Hoylake on Sunday. Six shots clear overnight, the lead was just two at one point but the 25-year-old stayed strong to finish on 17-under-par after a one-under 71, two better than Spaniard Sergio Garcia (66) and American Rickie Fowler (67).

Another American, Jim Furyk, was fourth on 13-under, with Adam Scott and Marc Leishmann tied for fifth one shot further back. McIlroy, who won the US Open in 2011 and the US PGA in 2012, is only the third man, after Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods, to win three Majors by the age of 25.

Charl Schwartzel did the best of the South African contingent, tying for 7th.
