Grandstand Coaching Cosatu to Meyer – Play Mvovo, not a retreaded fullback.

Heyneke Meyer struck me as a humble, dedicated, thoughtful human being, consistent with the way those who know him well describe the deeply passionate man.

A few years back, I went along with former colleague Barry Sergeant to a Rotary Club meeting in Pretoria where he was presented the highest honour the organisation can bestow, the Paul Harris Award. The other man to receive the gong that night was then Blue Bulls now Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer. He struck me as a humble, dedicated, thoughtful human being, consistent with the way those who know him well describe the deeply passionate man. With the Rugby World Cup a few weeks away, and the bounce of the ball going against Meyer's team, the coach is under intense pressure, especially after the Boks were dropped to fifth in the world rankings. But the smart money suggests Meyer and his team will bounce back. Bookmakers have the Springboks at 6/1 to lift the trophy, third favourite after New Zealand (6/4) and hosts England (9/2). So a place in the semi-final is well within reach. And once there, anything could happen. It would help, though, if politicians (and now trade unionists) stuck to commenting on things they actually know something about and stopped visiting their claptrap onto the rest of us. – Alec Hogg

Johannesburg – Springbok rugby coach Heyneke Meyer wants to preserve white privilege, Cosatu's national office bearers said on Thursday.

"It is time for the SA Rugby Union to transform," first deputy president Tyotyo James told reporters in Johannesburg.

"Rugby is a sport for all people in this country and not for certain people, as some think."

He said the issue was that although players of colour were selected for the Springbok team, they were benched.

Tyotyo used Springbok wing Lwazi Mvovo as an example.

"They put them (black players) on the bench and switch for instance a fullback, who is a white player, to play wing and leave Lwazi Mvovo, who is a specialist in that position outside. We say as Cosatu, that cannot be," he said.

There were many black rugby players in the Western Cape and Eastern Cape so it was not about a shortage of players.

"The coach of the day wants to preserve white privilege," said James. – News24
