The emerging field of nutritional psychiatry suggests that a diet containing certain foods can help people to manage emotional challenges. In the chronic stress caused by the coronavirus pandemic, your gut microbiome gets out of whack and inflammation sets in – and that leads to inflammation in your brain, says author and nutritional psychiatrist Uma Naidoo. Food can fix this imbalance of good and bad bacteria in your gut, and research has shown that if you change how you eat, and change your stress level, you can start to rebalance the bacteria in your gut. Her recommendation? Eat whole foods in a Mediterranean eating pattern. That means nuts, berries and olive oil, among other delicious things. – Renee Moodie
