The presentation I vividly remember from an Adobe conference I attended in London two years ago was by the EMEA head of Amazon's Alexa unit. She shared how Amazon was investing heavily in voice recognition in the belief it is "the next big thing", because Bezos's company believes voice commands will supplant typed ones. After failing to make a success of its in-house voice activating tool Cortana, Microsoft yesterday announced a near $20bn investment in the sector, its second biggest acquisition after LinkedIn.
