🔒 Alec Hogg: Vaccines best way to beat Covid blues

I’m impressed with the rational approach trade union Solidarity has taken to help its members separate facts from fiction on coronavirus vaccines. The independently minded organisation’s Research Institute released a 27 page research report last night. It results from investigations into experiences in heavily vaccinated countries like Israel, UK, USA and Hungary. The conclusion: vaccines are the best way for countries to get out of the pandemic. Here’s the context to president Cyril Ramaphosa’s lockdown address last night. Mortalities from South Africa’s third wave of Covid-19 are trending upwards (above). And with the Delta variant now having spread to most of SA’s provinces, national weekly infections (below) have climbed above the peak of the second wave. On the plus side after a slow start, vaccinations of South Africans (also below) are now rising sharply. All three of these graphs are from Stanlib chief economist Kevin Lings’s weekly pack.

Five years ago, Elon Musk’s Tesla bought another company he had co-founded, SolarCity – the retail renewable energy business run by the other co-founders, Musk’s cousins Lyndon and Peter Rive (they grew up together in Pretoria). Musk is now being sued by some other Tesla shareholders, including pension funds, who claim he engineered overpayment for SolarCity. Musk is arguing that as the deal had approval from Tesla’s shareholders (he owned 22% at the time) everything was above board. He is not fretting much about the court action – Musk is the highest profile passenger booked on a space ride with Virgin Galactic.
