Premium: Age of the strongmen – What Ukraine war means for age of autocrat
This newsletter is arriving a little later because of rivetting reads which absorbed my early morning curating shift. The first of these, from the FT's Gideon Rachman, is republished below. It peels away many layers of the onion that delivered the world's already two decade long swing towards "Big Man" politicians.
Jacob Zuma doesn't get a mention, but there's no doubt he was a member of what Rachman dubs Strongman International – a club that includes the other four leaders of BRICs. It's a subject the chief foreign affairs commentator has studied in great depth – evidenced by his new book 'The Age of the Strongman' which goes on sale next Thursday.
Rachman's piece below is a must-read for anyone serious about understanding what's happening in Ukraine right now – and, indeed, why fence-sitting Cyril Ramaphosa has needed to act to carefully over this watershed period for democracy. There is much residue of autocratic thinkers within the ANC, which CR inherited from the near decade of Zuma misrule.
