Boeing concealed safety issues for a year – The Wall Street Journal

Boeing didn’t share information about a problem with a cockpit safety alert for a year before the October crash of a 737 MAX jet in Indonesia.

DUBLIN — As more and more details of Boeing safety missteps emerge, the company looks more and more culpable. In the article below, the WSJ uncovers how Boeing failed to share its knowledge about problems with a cockpit safety alert for a year before the Lion Air crash in Indonesia. It is increasingly hard to believe Boeing's ongoing denial of any responsibility for the two crashes that cost hundreds of lives. While the company may not have been criminally culpable, it seems clear that it has been negligent and dishonest about the 737 MAX 8's safety issues. Pertinent information about known problems was withheld from regulators and airlines. Traditional safety processes weren't followed during the plane's development. Pilot training was neglected. And key safety features were offered as optional and expensive extras rather than as part of a standard purchase. There are a number of lawsuits brewing on behalf of the families of those killed in the 737 crashes. Once we get to the discovery phase of those trials, we'll no doubt see even more alarming information emerge. Boeing would do much better to come totally clean about what happened and to engage its stakeholders in an honest and productive discussion about how to prevent similar disasters in the future. No one is buying the party line at this point. – Felicity Duncan

(The Wall Street Journal) Boeing Co. didn't share information about a problem with a cockpit safety alert for about a year before the issue drew attention with the October crash of a 737 MAX jet in Indonesia, and then gave some airlines and pilots partial and inconsistent explanations, according to industry and government officials.
