Alec Hogg: Cape independence – not so wacky?
Yesterday's Rational Radio webinar featured fascinating investment insights from David Shapiro (on Nasdaq's SoftBank-related drop); SA's top tech analyst Irnest Kaplan (on Altron spinning off Bytes UK); and Ranmore's Sean Peche (on value investment opportunities). There was also a must-watch discussion with Phil Craig from the Cape Independence Advocacy Group, a political equivalent of PANDA – free thinkers from diverse backgrounds with a common goal.
When Western Cape independence was first mooted a few years ago I thought the idea crazy….but after hearing Phil's arguments am not so sure. The Cape is by no means an outlier in this age of demands for self-determination. A quick Google search reveals there are dozens of separatist movements in Africa. Hardly surprising, considering national boundaries in SA and elsewhere on the continent were drawn up more than a century ago in smoky European rooms.
