Long Covid-19 shutdown will spark tsunami of economic destruction β The Wall Street Journal
Chilling news footage of rows of Italians infected with Covid-19 gasping for breath in plastic ventilation equipment while journalists conduct hospital-based interviews in outfits last seen in Ebola outbreak camps in deep Africa is enough to send many people into self-isolation at the mere hint of a scratchy throat. But just as bad as the medical crisis that is unfolding is the economic one. The stark warning from The Wall Street Journal editorial board is that if countries keep their societies shut down for much longer than two weeks, a tsunami of economic destruction looms. This concern resonates with many of us who are looking out of our windows at deserted streets, empty shops and restaurants and fearing for our livelihoods as well as our lives. β Jackie Cameron
