Premium: How world sees SA – Cyril’s troubles hit the global headlines

Cyril Ramaphosa is now facing allegations of wrongdoing and the biggest blow to his image since he took office in 2018.

The attack on Cyril Ramaphosa over the theft of foreign currency at his farm is gathering momentum. This morning it hit global influencers for the first time courtesy of a lengthy report published by our partners, the Financial Times of London (republished below).

Most poignant section of the FT's report is the head of Corruption Watch opining that, like Watergate, the cover up appears to have been worse than the crime. Watergate ejected Richard Nixon, then incumbent of the most powerful office on earth. Proportionately, Ramaphosa possesses even more political enemies than Tricky Dicky had.

What happens next is anyone's guess. But from the insiders I've spoken with, odds are shortening on CR becoming the third successive president recalled by party. Indeed, a contingency plan is openly discussed: Paul Mashatile is touted by the 'Ramaphosa' faction of the ANC as the man to replace the president and head off apparently noxious deputy president David Mabuza.
