DUBLIN – Many people will be unwrapping drones this Christmas – the small, unmanned aircraft are a popular gift for those who love gadgets or for avid photographers. But the devices can be turned to more sinister uses. On Thursday, drones disrupted travel at London's Gatwick Airport in what authorities say was a deliberate attempt to disrupt travel. The incident highlights how quickly new threats are emerging, and how tough they can be to deal with. For airport authorities, there are few good solutions to the risks that drones pose, as they are hard to detect and difficult to trace. And even though this was apparently a targeted attack, even the casual use of drones can endanger aircraft. We humans are very good at building new toys and very bad at planning how to use them safely. – Felicity Duncan
