Why early retirement is a terrible mistake – The Wall Street Journal

DUBLIN — After a long weekend of relaxation and fun, I've been guilty of daydreaming a little of early retirement. After all, who wouldn't want unlimited leisure time while you're still young enough to enjoy it? But the evidence suggests that maybe this dream isn't all it's cracked up to be. In fact, early retirement has a number of downsides that may make it actively bad for us. And, of course, there's the fact that we enjoy our leisure time precisely because it's a change from the grind of work. Without work, leisure wouldn't be as special or as rewarding as it is. If you have every day off, you really don't have any days off – because you never have days on. So perhaps I'll shelve my retirement dreams and accept the joys of working. – Felicity Duncan
