Premium: The case AGAINST crypto – European Central Bank exec rants at ‘Ponzi Scheme’
Many in the financial establishment can't or won't get their heads around cryptocurrency. The latest example is a powerful attack from Fabio Panetta (62), a senior executive at the European Central Bank who has a PhD from London Business School.
In an interview with the FT, Panetta spoke for many of his ilk by ripping into digital currencies, referring to the $1.8trn asset class as a 'Ponzi scheme' and calling for an urgent regulatory clampdown. He repeated warnings of countryman Nouriel Roubini, the famed 'Dr Doom' who predicted 2008's Global Financial Crisis, who calls cryptos a massive fraud.
The FT piece, republished below, makes for interesting reading. If only to warn crypto enthusiasts that the Establishment is waking up to the reality that Bitcoin and its cousins are an existential threat to the fiat currencies which have dominated the world's monetary system since the agreement at Bretton Woods in 1944.
