Apologies for Friday's newsletter. The final edition of the missive, which I re-sent last night after requests from community members, got replaced by an earlier draft. I'm blaming it on the mountain air: we spent much of last week at Champagne Sports, my favourite getaway in the Drakensberg. Covid-19 has thrown the hospitality sector the biggest challenge imaginable. Yet Champagne Sport's didn't miss a beat, its occupancies only slightly down on last year. A reminder that investing during good times always pays off in bad..Most inspirational part of the holiday, though, came during our visit to a family friend recently diagnosed with a terminal disease. Whether it's health workers who turn up despite the obvious risks; hospitality staff who smile even though they have no idea if their jobs will survive another lockdown; or a family friend determined to exit without drama or disruption to others.
