Given his roots, South Africans are mostly aware of what Elon Musk is doing with SpaceX. But in the US, Musk's out-of-world ambitions are compared with those of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, the world's richest man. Bezos took the challenge a step further yesterday with the announcement he (and his brother) will be passengers on his Blue Origin company's first space flight. SpaceX may have been the Sputnik to Bezos's Apollo. But his rival is determined to become the first of them to personally visit space.
