JOHANNESBURG — Cutting back the 'red tape' is an idiom that refers to excessive regulation or conformity, but in the United States it seems it's employers themselves that are cutting the tape. There's a recent trend in job hiring in the country that sees less focus being placed on degrees and a specific skills set, in order to broaden the pool of candidates. So much so there's even a new term for it 'downskilling'. It's not a blanket movement however as some corporates still maintain the need for higher education and experience, but there may be some lessons in this for South African companies. – Stuart Lowman
